What Is The True Cost of Hair Transplants?

01/05/09 3:48 PM

"Wow, that is expensive!". That is a common response when someone finds out how expensive hair transplant surgery can be, and rightly so, because it is a luxury item. But once you get past the initial sticker shock there are some points to consider.

A proper hair restoration, done correctly, should be able to stand on it’s own for the rest of your life so in reality, broken down over the coming years, the cost is not that great. You don’t need to trade up when it breaks down. You don’t need to replace the transmission if you miss third too many times, and you certainly don’t need to worry about it falling out later.

But the true cost of hair restoration can actually be a lot higher than your initial quote. By this I mean that if you do not go to the right clinic the first time the financial outlay for repair can be double or triple your initial investment. There is nothing wrong with price shopping, especially in today’s economy, but do not let the price be the deciding factor on which to base your decision. Do your research, find the clinic that is the most consistent with excellent results, then if you simply cannot afford to move forward with surgery take some time to save up. You’ll be glad you took the time to save up for the procedure at the clinic of your choice. Once this is done it cannot be undone, only repaired.

how much would it truly cost for me to travel to hanson and wong from the uk and have 6000 grafts and travel expenses, thanks

  2. Jotronic Says:

    Paul,

Thanks for the question. First off, to assume 6000 grafts is quite the stretch. The doctors do not like to recommend more than 4500 to 5000 at the maximum especially going on photos alone. We have to assume you have average donor laxity and combine that with what we see in your photos as your donor density.

Because you’d be coming from the UK we would deduct 400.00 from your bill to help with your travel expenses and we will pay for two nights lodging at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Vancouver (nice place). The fee for the procedure is 5.00 per graft up to 2000 in a session then 3.00 for each graft over 2000 in the same session.

The only other expenses you will have is for your food outside of the clinic (we pay for lunch and dinner) and any cab rides or purchases you make during your visit.

Let me know if you have more questions.

    Joe

thanks ,but is that dollars or pounds ,what would 9000 pounds get me

  4. Jotronic Says:

That is in dollars. What you can get for 9000 pounds is dependent upon the current exchange rate. As of today’s rate that would get you between 3000 and 3500 grafts.

  5. dog Says:

when did you raise the price? wasnt it 4.5 and 2.5?

  6. paul jones Says:

hi again, when you remove hair from back of head for grafts ,say you have paid for 4000 grafts, but doctors have got more hair for grafts in strip, what do they do with the extra hair left from strip . i think looking at your hair transplant has convinced me to go for it. thanks paul

  7. jotronic Says:

It was 4.5 and 2.5 a few years ago but like other clinics we have had a bump in the price. This was the case roughly three years ago.

  8. jotronic Says:

The doctors never throw away hair. You must understand that estimates are just that, only estimates, so the final number will be lower or higher depending on your particular characteristics however the doctors are generally pretty accurate with their estimates. You would have to have above average donor laxity (which is hard to see in photos) for the final graft count to be significantly higher than our estimates. We always work with the patient regarding cases like this.

  9. paul jones Says:

hi again jotronic i have been looking into cost of 4500 grafts with you and its 17500 dollars ,thats 8525 pounds is this right, would i need to come over one time before treatment or have treatment first time i come over thanks for your time

  10. jotronic Says:

Hi there. The cost would be $18375 USD (taxes included). Hasson & Wong subtracts $400 for travel and pay for two nights lodging at a local hotel. I’m not sure what the conversion would be for pounds, but you can check at http://www.xe.com for accurate currency conversion. If you have any more detailed questions, please contact the clinic directly. Ask for me ;-) . I look forward to speaking with you. Thanks for writing.

    Hi Joe,

Congrats on your impressive hair restoration results. I really like your story because it was a great success and I feel we have many of the same hair characteristics. I’ve had Dr. Wong review my case via photos.

Question re: your density. Were you above, average, or below average on the density scale? Do you know what your donor hair density was?

    Thanks…

    Ron

PS Your jotronic {at} hairtransplantmentor(.)com email address isn’t working. I sent an email earlier and it bounced back to me. FYI.

  12. jotronic Says:

Thank you for your comments. Five years on I’m still enjoying the difference that my procedures have meant for me and I still appreciate the comments by my readers. In my case, Mike in our Seattle office told me that my donor area was a 3 out of 10. This was because I had two stacked donor scars in my donor area but my density was not the best either. In fact, it was average at best but my hair is considered to be on the fine side so more grafts were needed in my case to get the same result of someone with hairs that are thicker in diameter. My saving grace has always been what Dr. Wong has called my “mutant laxity” in that my laxity was way above average even after having two previous procedures. That is why my case, especially back in the day, was considered to be so unusually good.

Regarding the email issue, thank you for pointing it out. I’ll work on it as soon as I can.

Dear Sir i have 2 strips before 2 diffrent scars. stretchmark at the back, what a mess is there any hope

  14. Dave Collins Says:

will the laxity exercises you demonstrate really help if started 3 months prior to your very first procedure? If the doctors estimated 4500 grafts what percentage over that estimate might one expect if the laxity exercises were followed?

  15. jotronic Says:

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for writing. It’s really tough to say what kind of improvement one will see above and beyond a specified recommendation. When we make a recommendation it is based on what we think is possible if the patient were to have surgery on the same day of said recommendation. The amount of hair above this recommendation that can be taken with three months of exercises depends on the make up of your scalp tissue. Those with thicker scalps tend to need more time to loosen up whereas those with thinner scalps can make the donor area more loose in less time. The physiology of any patient determines how loose the patient can make their donor area assuming the scalp exercises are performed as instructed. So, in summary, I don’t exactly know. It can range from an increase of 500 grafts to 2000 grafts but of course because we don’t know exactly what we’ll get sans scalp exercises we cannot accurately gauge how much benefit the patient received in the end. We do know they work however as tight patients have returned with loose scalps after even a few weeks of exercises.
